RC 372: Phantosmia

Phantosmia aka phantom smells – is what I have just for Halloween! Is there smoke in here or is that just Bridfe of Dracula arriving? No, it’s just Liz Truss…

A spooky dark mix of tunes, when the biggest horror isn’t monsters, phantoms or ghouls but what’s going on in the world….Monstrous mashups, dark ditties, evil electronia, cadaverous covers, horrible happy hardcore and revolting, and rave annoying alliteration….and we say goodbye to Coolio who has gone to Gangster Paradise at last, and talk Twitch TOS-sers, Discord challenges and how I really hate Ghostbusters.

It’s a cornucopia of phantosmia I tell thee! Does anyone smell smoke? It’s fine…

And You Are Safe: This is a Thriller/Dragula/Ghostbusters/Monster Mash/Spooky Scary Skeletons free zone!

Let’s do it. Eventually. Hello and welcome to Radio Clash, this is 372 and it’s a spooky episode, Phantosmia. Let’s see what’s going on. Hello and welcome to Radio Clash, this is 372 and it’s Phantosmia. Pre-Halloween, spooky, special but also named after the condition because that’s what I have at the moment. I have Phantosmia and everyone’s going, what’s Phantosmia? Phantosmia is phantom smells and I smell smoke at the moment. It’s a bit like being with someone who smokes 60 packs a day, that’s a lot of cigarettes. Smokes 60 a day, it’s like this cigarette smoky smell always in your nose, and not always a lot of the times, especially at night or early in the morning when I’m recording this at 6 in the morning and yeah the doctors are looking at it and I don’t know what it is and I’m aware that they’ve looked into some of the obviously scary ones and they’re all doing the, oh well we’ll give you some steroidal spray and see if it goes away, but it seems to me an appropriate name for a podcast around the spooky sort of thing, like the name Phantosmia. And you just heard Beyond Therapy versus EchoFly and Angie Brown, that’s Higher Beyond Therapy extended rave mix, I heard that at the KniteClub, spelled with K, K-N-I-T-E, Club Brave at the Scala in Kings Cross, just, well where did I put this out, probably would be about a month ago, brilliant night, there was Acen playing and Altern-8, Shades of Rhythm who played that, it took me a while to work out who was by because I really loved it and I remember it and I was like is that that song that says ‘Read my lips’, it sort of says that but it’s a bit slightly different though, we just seem to almost be saying about Phantoms even though it’s all a very spooky track to start on, there is stuff about Phantoms and it sounds like Phantoms, I don’t think it is, but it sounds like Phantoms. I tried to look at the lyrics, there are only lyrics and that came out in 2020 but they played it and I went what is this and I actually went through all of the videos posted about the event to try and find if someone recorded it and someone had and then shazammed it. I should have shazammed it at the time, I was too busy dancing, people filmed me dancing, I was dancing like a loon and there is actually footage out there of me dancing which is quite scary. I hope you’re all well and haven’t got phantom smells, oh yeah I’ve got to mention that at the start of the thing was the ident done by reconthuse, thank you reconthuse that’s the one I set for the challenge ages ago and I’ve just had another challenge, the punk challenge which I haven’t actually got anything from the punk challenge in this podcast, yeah good timing, well because I’d already planned out the whole show and it’s already incredibly packed so enough waffling from me, I’m going to start with a track by the person who won that challenge, iWillBattle but not with a track he won with, this is Freaky Kiss 65, Nicki Minaj vs White Zombie, not the track you expect, I don’t think it is, maybe it is. Is this Dragula? Yes, it isn’t Dragula, yes, Result. That was Suede, with Personality Disorder from the new album. The album Autofiction that came out a few weeks ago, a week ago, very recently and then before that we had another new mashup, although actually since I’ve put this in the playlist it’s actually released a new compilation but that’s the latest Disco Deluxe volume 5 from Hallmighty that’s True Soul slash Break My Faith, Beyonce vs New Order and yes we do have the morning sun here though I can’t see it but yeah, it’d be appropriate to play a true song and then before that we had another Break My Soul Beyonce mashup which is by Happy Cat Disco. Then before that we had a bit of a Chic section because that was knomercy911 from YouTube but it’s a YouTube rip, I’d played the Rhythm Scholar mix of Coolio’s 1, 2, 3, 4 so I searched around and found that mashup that’s Sister Sledge vs Coolio, 1, 2, 3, 4, The Greatest Dancer mashup, not the best of titles, it was the worst of titles but yes I know nothing about that, it was made a few years ago, nothing at all, I couldn’t find any information. Then before that we had Orbital and we have to play Satan It’s Halloween or coming up to Halloween and that’s 30 something years later mix from the new 30 something album that was released a few months ago. Then before that we had Bicep from 2021, that’s X featuring Clara La San, I heard that on the radio and went oh that’s really good, that’s from Iles, brilliant album, very much I think I’m the loved album but it’s brilliant and weirdly that wasn’t one of the ones I actually marked to play, I went to my to play folder and went oh it’s not in there, that’s bizarre so I had to put it in there and then before that a new mashup from DSP, French bootlegger that’s Rhythm of the Chase, Corona vs Giorgio Moroder that’s the Chase vs Rhythm of the Night, brilliant, I love that, seriously anybody who uses Georgia Marodo is fine by me but the Chase is one of the best tracks and it just works, Chugging Disco works pretty well with 90s Rave, didn’t you, well Gusto don’t you and a few others. Then before that we had Sickick with Baby and the Gangster 2, Lana Del Rang vs Coolio, obviously I’m playing the Coolio stuff because of the sad death of Coolio which was about a week or so before recording this, very very sad, it’s sort of a constant there in sort of my late teenage 20s years, yeah about that age about 20, sad, very sad, it ended up with the blog was being full of RIP posts so what I usually do now is try and do nods to them musically in the podcast, it just makes more sense and also the blog doesn’t look like a cemetery which given it’s Halloween would be appropriate actually but you know, not for the right reasons. And then at the start of that section we had iWillBattle with Freaky Kiss 65, Nicki Minaj vs White Zombie, no not Dragula and I was going to say this is a Ghostbusters and Dragula free zone and also no thriller, no, I meant to say this at the start, no Thriller, denied, Ghostbusters, denied, no Dragula, denied, I’m less against Dragula but Ghostbusters as you can see me ranting on Twitter and Facebook, I’m just so over that song, I’m just so over it, I’ve just heard it so many times now in mashups and remixes and covers and you know it’s become this thing of retro commercialism, you know where you got a whole generation and sadly it’s my generation, the Gen X generation who are now getting into that level of being able to pay for trinkets and take their own kids to things and whatever and you know it’s, I feel that Ghostbusters has gone from a sort of a treasured childhood memory into this sort of Star Wars like machine and it does seem like people just press that Pavloz bell and just constantly you know getting people to salivate over Ghostbusters, oh a new Ghostbusters thing, oh you know we covered it, oh isn’t it, but isn’t it ironic, nostalgia, I’ve got a weird thing with 80s nostalgia at the best of times because I live through it and I remember most of it, I wasn’t too young to remember it so it does seem like if you’re too young to remember it people then change how you see it, you know I can sort of mould how you see it whereas if you get to remember it you’re like no this is not how it was and there’s a lot of that going with the 80s where people have sort of changed it again and there’s a lot of times in interesting ways, you know the people who are now copying a copy of a copy of an 80s idea and it sort of goes somewhere new but a lot of it is just a bit distasteful and yeah endlessly pushing that Ghostbusters Pavlov’s bell is one of them. Another one is September, can we just stop making Earth, Wind and Fire September mashups, it’s just not funny anymore, the first couple of years it was like oh yeah September the 21st, it was in 19th but yeah the 21st thing is, oh it’s Earth, Wind and Fire day, oh they mentioned the lyrics haha, you know I’m sure some blogger or somebody had this idea and it was original and now it’s just every year and you’re like any joke if you have to repeat it more than once or twice it just stops being funny, it stops being good. I feel like I like Ghostbusters, I mean Ghostbusters itself was ripped off from Huey Lewis anyway and I was a big Huey Lewis fans and no wonder I liked it at the time because I was a big fan of Huey Lewis. So we’re going to play a, I don’t know if this is really a scary track, it’s crumplscary, it’s scary in its combinations, this is sweet trumpet of freedom, it’s Lou Reed versus the Heimatdamisch, always good to have some oki on the podcast and someone else on the channel. That was UA with Hyper Ballad from 2010, from her 2010s album which I can’t pronounce because it’s in Japanese, a Japanese artist, apparently quite well known in Japan but I love that Bjork cover, it’s very experimental but I love how the people take covers their own direction completely and that’s one of those bonkers but in a good way. Then before that we had Jimmy J and Cru-LT, I Want To Be Forever which is from their 2014 compilation, the best of Jimmy J and Cru-LT. I saw them DJ at Kniteclub and it was first Kniteclub by the way and I got a really good feedback, Knightforce Records is what ran the night, they do Happy Hardcore and Jungle and various free releases and new shizzle and Lunacy who runs Knightforce did a double CD compilation, you got soap as well because the logo was a soap with Kniteclub on it, so you know we got some soap and two CDs but it was great to see Jimmy J and Cru-LT, I think I’ll have to speak to one of them and then they got so in our stage for being drunk and jumping in front of Acen, it was a memorable night but yeah I didn’t get to say how much DJ Nono loves Jimmy J and was rather starstruck. Then before that we had Acen, new formation? Acen with Rings Around The Moon from Trip To The Moon 2092 which is one of the Knightforce releases from 2020, I love anything that samples Windmills Of My Mind and then before that at the start of that section we had Oki, I don’t know if I mentioned it was Oki, with sweet trumpet of freedom, Lou Reed versus the Heimatdamisch and yes a little bit of the Hoff, David Hasselhoff Looking For Freedom, Heimatdamisch covering Guns N’ Roses, it was one of the challenges, I forget which one, I think it was probably the hair metal challenge, taking it in a very abstract way but very crumple, we’re liking the crumple and I’ve just been listening to PDS Mix on his discord last Saturday, we did a joint back to back where you might have, in the pre-version of this, which is the, I was streaming through my discord, Radio Clash does have a discord, check the RadioClash.com and just search for discord or have a look through the post, you’ll see a post about the discord and I was streaming this very podcast so some people have actually heard this podcast but yeah it made some changes since so it’s not exactly the same. And then PDS Mix came along, heard that and then offered me to do a back to back on his discord so that’s why I did it on Saturday and those mixes are now on the Radio Clash blog and MixCloud, they’re not for download at the moment, they can be, that was a mixture of things and I think I played the rings again around the moon or did I do that on the preview but yeah a few of the tracks made it into that long mix which is three and a half hours of mixes and so I did now begin with and he did now and we sort of alternated until late and I did like a long to after party set and it was a lot of fun and I do think discord streaming is the future and given the shenanigans around Twitch around throwing PDS Mix and Daily Supreme off the platform for something that seems to be some glitch in the system and what was more worrying is that, I mean that’s pretty worrying itself but what bothers me even more is that they have a rule which says if you’re banned off the platform even if it’s their fault and you can’t get to speak to them, you can’t tune in, you can’t watch anything and you can’t be featured on any of the channels so you can’t be a guest DJ on the other channels or a peer or any of those things which if you’re banned for doing something really illegal I can understand but it sets a precedent where they can tell you who can be on your streams and I really don’t like that, I’m not sure if I really want to stream on Twitch again because of that because is kind of obviously the possible offence like nudity copyright is a contentious one with me, that’s always nudity actually but you know you can kind of understand that and the legality stuff really a platform should not be telling you who you can have on your platform unless there’s a very good reason. And so I do think Discord is the future having streams on the Red Clash Discord and the screen sharing works really well and the OBS stuff from my machine is not so great but I do think it’s the future because you can use GIFs in the chat, you can have multiple people and you can do back to back easier, you can swap between people really much easier, you don’t have to raid somewhere else and you know you can monetise it but there isn’t all the hype trains and things like that and I do prefer that but I do think that you know PDS Mix should be restated on Twitch if he wants to continue there and it’s bad for him because he was relying on that for the income but it does disturb me the idea that a platform can tell you who can be on your channel and then they can ban you because you feature them directly which is just like what, especially if it seems to be over some kind of payment glitch. It’s just yeah, not happy about that, really not happy. So continue the monster theme and play a track by Sault who just released a new track X that was recently released on Bandcamp, they’ve done more of a reggae dub direction but this is from their Black Is album from 2020 which was about the whole Black Lives Matter movement and it’s called Monsters. That was Dumproofin with Dubcats, The Cure versus the Sabres of Paradise and that’s from 2022, then before that we had John Foxx and the Belbury Circle with The Right Path from Empty Avenues, the EP I’ve played all the music from now over the years and that’s from 2013 and I really wish John Foxx had worked with Ghost Box again, it just works so well. Then before that we had Caterina Barbieri with The Landscape Listens which is from her recent album Spirit Exit, a really really good album, I really really recommend that, I heard it via Dandelion Radio, I think it was that track, though initially I selected another track and then re-selected the original track back in because it worked better in the mix but yeah, if you heard the preview of this you probably heard a different track there. Then before that we have what has become known as the Evil Morty theme, originally was Blonde Redhead for the Damaged Coda which I think I’ve heard before it began, the Evil Morty theme but from 2001’s Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons and I heard that via Iggy Pop, Iggy Pop was playing it because his friend Jim Jarmusch was going to see them, he played that and I was like oh, I didn’t realise at the time I’d heard it before through the Rick and Morty but yeah, when I heard it Rick and Morty I was like I’ve heard that thing before. So yeah, it’s been flirting around for a long time, I did check out the rest of Blonde Redhead’s stuff, I really don’t like it, it’s a bit too arty for me but I like that one. And then before that we had Denise Sherwood, Adrian Sherwood’s daughter with Ghostheart, that’s from 2019’s Pay It All Back Vol. 7 and also her album This Road which she released in 2020, again really good and that’s been in the stack for a very long time, very very very long time. Before that we had a track which I think is very much about the status quo, even though it was recorded in 2013, that’s the Bad Shepherds, Adrian Edmondson’s group with The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum, which is ever green but also that sort of very spooky version works on a Halloween show but also with what’s happening with Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng and destroying the economy and all that stuff that’s going on the moment. And that’s from the album Mud, Blood and Beer. Then before that we had a new song, well it’s not a song, it’s a track from Akusmi – Divine Moments of Truth from 2020’s Fleeting Future and then an artist I very recently got into and was added last minute, that’s Tamino with Indigo Night from 2018’s Amir album and he’s just released an album called Sahar and Tamino is Tamino Amir Mohamram Fouad to a Belgian Egyptian singer who is the grandson of Mohamram Fouad who I had heard of, if you check back in the annals of Radio Clash History you’ll see a podcast recorded about Egyptian music and African music and I recognise the name from when I visited Egypt and my research for that. But I love that, it reminds me a lot of Mashrou Leila but also with that sort of very Radiohead thing going on and he’s a fan of Radiohead. And interestingly Arctic Monkeys, he did a very interesting cover of I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor, I love that sort of storytelling and that, there’s something very poignant and also the whole thing about a walking machine and I walk through things I travel but it’s just like through a screen, I do very, very much resonate with that the whole thing about travelling is it doesn’t necessarily broaden the mind, it just changes the scenery around you. Then before that we had Sad Night Dynamite Crying Over Nothing, that’s from 2020’s SND01, I think that was like an EP they did. And then at the start of the section we had Sault with Monsters which has been in the stack for ages from the titled Black Is album from 2020, probably the reason I don’t play that is because it was all over 6Music at that time, I generally don’t like to duplicate but it just works, it works with the theme, yeah. So we’re going to play a mashup, it’s one of those things where there are sometimes things that end at the start of the end which don’t really work in the mix and it is always an interesting thing about trying to make a consistent mix that works all the way through as a whole and how much you let the little edges not be locked off and that’s always the eternal dialogue of myself over doing these podcast because I like to really refine the playlists and obviously I always put too much stuff in so I have to take it out and it becomes shaped into a certain way but also I feel that sometimes I take the things out that are a little bit demanding or weird or different and I feel like sometimes I should leave those in and that was obvious from my random session because when I did the back to back with PDSmix it was all tracks I haven’t played on Radio Clash but it was just kind of like me just freeforming it and it brought up several things that was like oh you know you know sometimes I should just trust my insects and just go with that, that, that and do something really quick and sometimes I think it works better making it work as a mix. This is one of the ones which I really love but does not work at all in a mix and this is DJ Useo and Monument Manipulation, it’s Depeche Mode versus Austin Cole.|| And that was me, well TBC, aka Instamatic. With Plain Clothes Ticket Man, Elliot Smith, well really, Heatmiser versus The Carpenters. That’s new and it won the last week’s challenge, hence why I was setting the punk challenge which finished on Monday, a challenge set by VixoriaDrift to mash 4 5 artists, Fiona Apples was one and Elliott Smith was another and of course some of the big Elliot Smith fans so I did a couple of Elliott Smith mashups so I think that is quite successful, I wouldn’t really have played it, I wasn’t ever totally sure of it but when it won I was like oh okay it must be good enough to play. And then before that we had Francis Lung from his short stories EP that came out recently, that’s Midland Hotel 2, the restaurant Midland Hotel being in Manchester, I love that, especially the bit about them dancing on the line of floor, it makes me quite tearful. As I said in the last time I played Francis Lung, there was something very Arab Strap but Arab Strap they could sing because yeah, well Malcolm could sing but Aidan can’t really sing that well, but there’s something very story telling, this podcast has been very much about story telling. And then before that we had CastleR with a mashup called Burn Out which is My Chemical Romance, yes me playing My Chemical Romance mashup versus Fallout Boy vs. Senses Fail vs. Jimmy Ear World and that was for a challenge and it’s been in the stack for a while that it was supposed to be played in the last podcast and got bumped because there was just too much stuff in here but I was bummed because it is a really good end of podcast track and I don’t usually like 90s, 90s, emo, punk, emo, rock, whatever you want to call it sort of emo things, I was never into it but I like that one, it’s very epic. And before that was LeeDM101, a new mashup released only 11 days ago, that’s Bullet Spell, Nina Simone vs. Massive Attack and that’s Nina Simone, I put a spell on you and any Nina mashup is almost a dead cert for the podcast if it’s any good and Massive Attack Bullet Boy, a track I didn’t know and it sounds very similar to Teardrop, those drums are very Teardrop-like but apparently it’s from 2005, it’s a soundtrack to a film so it’s probably why I’ve missed it but yes it’s very, very, very like Teardrop those drums but really wonderful and moody and spooky. And before that we had Diablo Swing Orchestra with Sightseeing In the Apocalypse, a bit like Muse yes and that’s from 2021’s Swagger and Stroll Down the Rabbit Hole and it seems like a lot of the album is about Donald Trump and the state of the world but you know very timely because stuff about nuclear destruction as mentioned in the lunatics in the asylum could actually happen. Thank you Russia, thats for you. Then before that we had Dub War with Celtic Cross, about the wars that are going on at the moment and also of Celtic Cross I think double meaning there because they’re a Welsh band. And then before that we had DJ Useo with Monument Manipulation Depeche Mode vs Austin Cold and mashing up early Depeche Mode that’s always going to get my attention but it sounds like a printer rhythmically printing at the same time with someone shouting in the background and I like that. That’s also the Austin Cold track, it’s a bit like Printer Jam by Mistabishi, there’s something with those noises and very much like printing to me. It does work really well but it is very much not a team player in mashup mixed terms. So I need to go and get to bed, it’s nine o’clock and I really need to get to bed. Yes, I tend to go to bed in the morning in bed. I don’t always but yeah I do tend to work through the night and then go to bed in the morning. That’s why I don’t really a morning person. I’m going to play out with two Black Sabbath related mashups, one I’m surprised I’ve never played, I thought I’d played back, back, back in the day and it turns out I’ve not. So this is a challenge track as well, another TBC aka Instamatic track but one I’m a big fan of even though it didn’t win because it’s a palindrome, the actual track which is based around the Boards of Canada is like a musical palindrome, if you look at it it sort of works in reverse, it’s for the reverse challenge so you can flip it, it looks weirdly the same, it’s like they’ve created it to have symmetry and it’s mixed with Crosses originally by Cause and Effect, the 90s group and there’s a little bit of Black Sabbath in there as well and then after that you can hear mashupchuck with their mashup, Mr Crowley At Last, Ozzy Osbourne vs Etta James, so I’ll speak to you soon and I hope you’re all well. One two one two, testing testing testing, two three, one two three. You
