RC 376: Hinterland / Epic 2023?

Hinterland is what I call the period between Christmas and the New Year, that strange waiting room time where it’s not the next year and you slowly eat the leftovers and the Christmas/New Year blues kick in. A grey snowy/rainy hinterland where light barely enters, and things seem rather bleak or weird.

This is a 2023 dub/punk new year themed episode dedicated to Terry Hall of the Specials and FB3 who died recently, Vivienne Westwood who I heard about immediately after I recorded this podcast, and the 20th annviversary of the death of Joe Strummer. , Wilko Johnson who died in November and Jet Black of the Stranglers who died early December.

It’s been a bad month in the world of punk.

Also some drum and bass and acid chiiled vibes from Ceephax and less chilled vibes from Daniel Avery as we wave goodbye to 2023 and hope it’s much more epic and less shit than 2022, but don’t I always say that?.

Hello, Welcome to Radio Clash, this is 376 and it’s Hinterland, or Epic 2023 Question mark? Will it be epic? Welcome to Ready Clash 376 And it’s Hinterland Because this is recorded in the Hinterland The Christmas Hinterland as we call it around here You know that weird time between Christmas and New Year And also Epic 2023 Question mark Because I have a theory that the music in 2023 And currently now is becoming less of that Lockdown, acoustic and more epic More bigger, more maximalist, more widescreen More throwing the kitchen sink and everything Well that’s just my theory, I think it’s going to get more epic But the question is whether 2023 itself has become epic Hmm, probably not And you just heard I Fought the Law Mikkim vs The Clash And of course it’s not dated, but I think it’s from a few years ago Mikkim is an Eastern European producer He’s produced quite a few of dub drum and bass Remixes especially around The Clash Then before that we had from The Kunts With their Christmas single this year That’s Fuck the Tories And that’s the Mr B, the Gentleman Rhymer remix I didn’t really think I’d support them Although I found it funny how they managed to Piss off the sausage roll grifter that is Lad Baby And quite right too Although I think The Cunts are grifting to some extent I think Lad Baby is much worse example But I like that version by Mr B going all jungle And I agree with the sentiment obviously And then before the wonderful jingle from Cecille DeMilla The new one that was a Rat Race by the Specials From BBC concert live at the Paris Theatre 15th of December, 1979 And obviously included that because of the sad death of Terry Hall And also we just had the 20th anniversary of The death of Joe Strummer Who died 23rd of December I remember that, that was similar feeling to How I feel about Terry Hall Of Specials, FUNBOY 3 And many other things, kind of field And you will hear some Terry Hall And some more Joe Strummer and The Clash Later on in the podcast It’s a very dubby, punky, drum and bassy Some electronica, something with the new Ceephax And the new Daniel Avery albums The Ceephax one just recently dropped I’ve featured it on the blog RadioClash.com If you don’t know, I’m sure you do know Because you downloaded this But you never know where people get to hear this But yeah, from RadioClash.com You can feature the Ceephax album And the Daniel Avery album is brilliant as well We’ll talk about that later But we’re going to start with some more More Clash related shizzle RadioClash, I mean seriously, I mean It’s part of the MO That’s where we stole the name from So this is from DJ Feva’s Lockdown EP During lockdown he created a bunch of Lockdown related dub tracks This one was less lockdown related Probably is why I didn’t play it But this is Gun Clash Brixton The Clash Guns of Brixton By DJ Feva That was Dubxanne With Spirits in a Material World Spirits in a Dub World Featuring Benjamin Zephaniah I like BBenjamin Zephaniah but Dubbing up police tracks Oh that’s not the one I heard Maybe it was but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t Informously, a long long time ago On this podcast we did a podcast Probably the first ever podcast in the world On psychedelic mushrooms And just before they became illegal In the UK We thought we heard the best Or I thought I heard the best Police dub album ever And I think it was just audio hallucinations It certainly didn’t sound like that It sounded like King Tubby Or Lee Scratch Perry remixing the police It was like wow And I think it was just an audio hallucination Because everything was looping around In my head Even the birds and everything was just looping around Because it was like an in echo chamber So it was the best dub album ever And it was in my head, annoyingly I’ve always wanted to do a dub section And it just seemed appropriate Because of the death of Terry Hall And the 20th anniversary Of Dub and Reggae and Ska Just seemed to be appropriate To drop loads of tracks relating to that Before there was Funboy 3 With More I See The Less I Believe From their album Waiting From 1983 From Police and Dub So I actually couldn’t have been that It couldn’t have been that album Maybe it was a pre-release, I don’t know It’s such a shame that that Funboy 3 track Is out of date Is out nation divided And terrorism And all those things It’s such a relic of the times Things have changed And it’s nothing like that at all Ahem Yes Then before that we had Dubxanne With Message in a Bottle Message in a Dub Featuring Earl 16 I love Earl 16 I’ve played tracks I think with Mikkim again From Earl 16 And I couldn’t decide which one to put in So I put in both And usually one gets dropped I was like no I really think the Spiritual Anti-Materialism Your You Message is perfect for A New Year show And also There’s the line in Message in a Bottle About another year has passed And then Bottles Arriving at my shore And that kind of sums up Kind of where I’m at at the moment Talking about my experiences And a few things online The idea that Not everyone’s experience is unique But also Depressingly common And that also seems to work Very well with a A New Year idea So, you know And then before that We had Dubmones Featuring Sebastian Sturm That’s Pinhead That’s from The King-sized Dub 25 Convolution That’s from this year I don’t know, is that a cover? Is that a cover mashup? A mash cover? A cash-up A mother Of Pinhead By the Ramones I love how they dropped in bits of the Ramones And it’s also mixed in And with the radio sounds at the start And then at the start of the section We had DJ Feva Spell FEVA I think you can still find that online For downloads still available Very well worth checking out For 2020 That’s That’s Gun Clash Brixton I’ve rinsed several tracks from that EP Back in 2020 As it seemed to sum up the Times So I’m sure some of it Has probably hasn’t dated very well Because it’s talking about Johnson and Gove Hopefully Hopefully those are in the past Who knows what’s going to happen Fuck the Tories Fuck, fuck the Tories Et cetera And again It’s a shame those things are in the past It’s a shame things have changed Things have got so much better In the last two years Yeah, so hopefully 2020-23 is epic In Capitals I have no doubts But anyway What is epic Is the new album I would say epic in a very quiet way A new album from Ceephax And it’s called Baddow Moods And he released it I think it’s Christmas Day Yeah, it was Christmas Day He released it And very much I hate to use the phrase Return to Form Because there isn’t really a form With Ceephax Ceephax just does what Ceephax does It’s all acid Old machined Kind of nostalgia But kind of Ceephax It’s just what Ceephax does To say it’s acid Is not really It’s sort of acid Ambient Unlike his brother Square push It doesn’t go all Base workouts At sort of 170 BPM No But a variety of things And there’s some really nice Sort of chill track on this Surprisingly Piano tracks And something a little bit Even a little bit Happy hardcore A little bit Even Which is surprising By the next track He hasn’t exactly gone Hands on the air Whistle And that’s the stuff That’s the Ceephax But yeah I would really Would recommend checking Ceephax That’s spelled C-E-E-P-H-A-X If you don’t know And it’s available On Bandcamp And this is Strat Storm Mix by Ceephax That was DJ Useo With Girls Just Want to Tear Us Apart Cindi Lauper vs Joy Division And I hope You got my Feeling about the whole Epic That was the right Epic mix in places What I mean by that The whole frequency range The whole orchestral Big Sounds big Not necessarily Orchestral But you know Electronic And very much in that vein We have Daniel Avery From Ultra Truth The Latest Album And that’s KS Energy Featuring HAAi H-A-A-I And Kelly Lee Owens Both Or three Are not Strangest this podcast It just sounds like A massive breakbeat Drum and bass rave In the next room A booming echoey room But just Invelopes you Before that We had Cobrah With an H With brand new bitch 2022 as well I heard that via Iggy Pop On 6Music Actually Just playing some Cobrah Working with Coucou Chloe Chloe Cuckou? Cuckoo? French producer Bunshiin I really like Tranen Again from I was Come down On the drum and bass section Degs We’re still messed up We love Degs Another recent track A single from 2022 4AM Kru Are always welcome On this podcast 4AM Mark 3 Golden Boy That’s them Remixing Elf Kid With bits Of Reggae Diggy Hey Dougie Rascal Yeah that’s That’s a good mashup Hey Dougie Means Dizzy Rascal That needs to be done I wouldn’t play Probably Because of Revenge Fairly recently Yeah I don’t really like People that Beat up their partner Yeah Not good But that’s Got a little bit of that Jamaican Dancehall I can’t remember the name That I’m thinking Weedy G That’s sampled in there It’s very mashup like A Golden Boy track Then before that We had a remix Of the Lily Allen’s Smile By Mr. Trick And Dizzy Gillespie Swing and Bass Compilations They both have done Fair amount of those And going back to that Danny Bird Post I then went through a lot of I was like Oh yeah 5 Sorry Mr. Trick Oh Dizzy Gillespie So I kind of went through Their soundclouds I stalked their soundclouds You know For all the Freebies And stuff Which they can’t release Properly But I usually download For free So that’s how I heard that I think that’s Probably how I heard The new Like I said New It was back from March It’s new for me March 2022 That’s the new In quotes Remix Gold Dust Because it’s 10 years Oh my God Don’t you feel old DJ Fresh’s Gold Dust was released 10 years ago 7 years ago That’s the next March Fox Stevenson Of that And there was a big EP With about I think 7 or 10 Remixes on it That’s my favourite Because It just goes large It goes large In a very big fashion Fashion DJ Fresh’s Gold Dust You’ve probably heard it In a remix Or an advert Or whatever It just became Omnipresent It was one of those releases Which Unlike Say Shirefx Or Andy C Doesn’t really have The same profile That’s what to me Brought him to my attention I think is it him Apologies for isn’t We had another track Or that’s from The higher single That’s higher Vocal version Because actually on the album Sherelle’s vocal Is on the previous track I had to write a version But it’s mixed in Because I couldn’t be bothered To go and edit it myself And And I think I’m not sure What she’s speaking about But I suspect She’s talking about Queer spaces Generally queer spaces And raves how They are special spaces They are a church The dance floor is a church It’s a ritual space I think house planiers Came from gospel And yeah There’s a whole Thing there But Certainly the dance floor Has a queer Ritual aspects It is Our coming together space It is our Ritual space It’s an expression Of our culture It’s been there For a very long time 60 70 plus years And probably more If you go back Into the shamanic stuff And all that things And so many queer People are shamans It goes back Even thousands of years If you Recent times 56 years It is a very key part Of a culture Having that space But it is Hemmed in By everything around it So it is that Area where You can be yourself Or you know For other people To guess themselves And be themselves But as soon as you leave That dance floor It becomes Something else You have to go back Into the normal world I don’t know if that’s What it was about But that’s what it got From that That vocal snippet That was why it’s important For me What a mind Instamatic with Bush of Ghosts That’s a deal With the devil That’s Kate Bush Versus Ghost That’s again I think more And more Instamatic tracks Leaking in And more of the TBC stuff The more serious side Is leaking into them There aren’t that many Ghost mashups And that was done For one of the Challenges The Crumplbanger Challenge Which was Mashed Something that’s under-mashed And there aren’t That many Ghost mashups I’ve done one Titus Jones has done one There might be a few more But not many Which is weird Because Ghost Are Piggering Amazing I don’t know why But yes There is a darkness And art Track Much more epic And that was What Adriana said When she played it And it was like Yes, exactly And that’s why I came up With the 2023 Is the epic thing Because I’ve noticed That trend Of making things That were Epic even more epic That will be Continue into I might be wrong But that’s why I just have a feeling Occasionally I have these Little And I’m not usually wrong I have these Things It feels about right It’s like Three years after the Pandemic I think it’s It’s going to be a time When people will be like Obviously circumstances Allowing It’s now time To let everyone’s hair down Or go Just super wide screen Glitz Glam I can see that happening In a similar Very epic frame Hallmighty with Set fire to Blue Monday You shouldn’t do that Don’t set fly to Unless you’re throwing it It’s Adele Versus New Order Sebastian Boom And that’s from No pressure A collection of New Order mashups Which Hallmighty Released A month or two ago A couple of months now And yes Again mashupchuck And that’s something It’s been In the stack for a while It was more epic than Sort of Dua Lipa disco Dio Nothing really Sort of big Versus big Big hair Versus big beats Bigish beats I’ve been liking mashupchucks work Throughout 2022 And hopefully We’ll continue to Hear more good stuff From them In 2023 Then we had Cookiee Kawaii 2021’s Van Ice That’s Haters Anonymous You might have heard A theme there I mean that In a weird way Inspired A mashup I’m going to play Right at the end Though Doesn’t involve Cookie Kauai But there is a similar Theme through a different artist I love how it’s like Haters get online Do your thing Don’t rake her We had a mashup Which I’m surprised I’ve not played before Bobby Martini Too busy thinking about The Magnificent 7 The Clash Versus Marvin Gay And it’s This one’s for Joe Compilation I did in Which was the 5th anniversary Of Joe Strummer’s death That is still out there It was MutantPop.net Slash Strummer Remix Punk Rock Warlord This is a subtitle of it It was all mashups From people that Dunproofin’ Useo Me Juxtaposeur Marty Batfreak Ian Fondue World Famous Audio Hacker And a lot of people Did stuff like that And I think that worked Really well Other compilations Later on I thought Oh, we were Mac And that was a nightmare But actually That one wasn’t too bad Yeah, it’s weird to think 15 years later Now it’s the 20th Anniversary of the death Of Joe Strummer I was listening to it And I was still stunned By it And you might hear Another one of the mashups Which at the time I played about 5 or 6 of them And then I didn’t play The rest Because I was like Don’t want to Bother people With all this There was a mix From the new album I don’t know Moods That’s Struct I like the sort of Upbeat But chilled nature of it It is very I know I said Happy Hardcore It’s not really The piano And things like that And the way It’s sort of mournful But there is a sort of A piano house It’s a piano house The Ceephax gets So we’re going to play A track We’re going to get a bit more Downbeat now Reaching towards the end Of the podcast I hope not It was originally About 2.7 hours 3 hours And I whittled it down But there’s always As always A massive struggle To get everything down This is by Universe Sound System USS The air track In this But I definitely know The Doors This is Doors versus air Riders of love That was Stronger By Sault From one of four New albums Well, new They were dropped in November That’s from Earth There was also Eleven A bit like Well, Ed Sheeran Does symbols and they They do numbers And so There was like Nine and there was eleven But I forget the name Of the other two albums If you like Sault If you like Sault’s work You really, really Really need to get over To their Bandcamp And check them out There is a lot of listening to do I’m not like all of them I mean some of them Are very gospel Like Very Jesus based Which is not Really so popular for me It’s always worth listening To what they do They’re brilliant And no one knows who they are Apart from the singers The singers who work with them I’m not sure if the singers are Part of them Little Sims is always Heavily connected with Sault But I suspect the people behind The people doing the music They stay Out of the media And they’re a collective In London I love them for that They just like Well, we just put on music We don’t do videos And we don’t know interviews You take it on What’s out there And I think it’s worked Very well for them Belize featuring MF Doom That’s Danger Mouse And Black Thought 2022’s Cheat Codes A brilliant album One of my favourites Of 2022 Heard it Typical But that’s actually Been Supposed to have been In a couple of the podcasts I could never refit it In anywhere It’s one of those tracks I love the sample That is Federal Duck Piece on my mind It’s a Very rare Not very well known Psychedelic Rock record From 1968 I just love the mood of that And I’m playing that In part The fact that Obama President But that In his end of year List of his favourite tunes And he was in power When he refused to Allow In his country Although he’s born in London His parents settled From the age of Well his age of About one Into America But unfortunately They never got him Proper Status So like a lot of the dreamers He never got status So He didn’t realise that And then it wasn’t until later Life He realised He had trouble getting back in He got back in And he went out for another Tour He just refused to get Let him back in And that was it Until he died From the United States The fucking cheek Was a man who Led the immigration policy Which was worse Than previous presidents So for all of his Talk His actions were An extra 2.5 million people Were denied entrance To the United States So screw him How dare he use the music Of the people He refused to Allow back into their Homeland The place they grew up Ceephax with Roddy That’s a Wonderful track Very A synth wave I love the What seems to be synthetic Rumbles of thunder And it seems to All been generated And that has Has its own Feeling in itself Synthetic thunder I like that Of course I had to go Universal Sound System And Riders of Love Riders on the Storm Yeah, I’m not For anything Predictable My mixing sometimes And the Doors Versus Air I assume that the love part Is the air track And is that A recent Air track? I thought I’d heard All the Air tracks And I was like I don’t recognise that So I said I had a track The punk rock Warlord Mashup Compilation I did I’m really Surprised I did Not play this This is One of my favourite Mashups I’ve ever done And it’s pre MVSep It’s pre AI separations Any acapellas Available for We did the whole album By then the Clash Rock band stems Hadn’t leaked So we had to do it like London Booted Had to be done Just with what you could Create or Extract And the same here So I could do this A lot better now But this is Willesden Blue The Orb Mescaleros That’s Joe Strummer And the Mescaleros Which was his One of his Later bands After The Clash broke up Bonzo Dog Band And this is Got a personal track I used to live in Willesden Green So he was talking About the areas Near me The Mescaleros track Is called From Willesden to Cricklewood I knew both those places Very well And then I managed to Find a Bonzo Dog track Which has A weird interview It’s Shirts A bit of street Just accosting Random people In Willesden Blue room It’s quite Dubby BB Seaton A reggae artist That I Randomly came across When I was looking for Covers of Reggae covers of Sweet Caroline As you do And that is Well, it’s from a compilation But it’s from Mid-70s I feel lost by And it’s one of those tracks Where you hear it And you go Oh, that must be a cover That’s so brilliant Why have I not heard this song before And you look and you find out It is actually an original And it’s a lost A lost reggae Classic, I would say The Specials with Friday night Saturday morning On the B side Of Ghost Town 1981 To me, I think that’s What The third Specials album Which never happened Which then became Specials A.K.A. Not with The other three The Funboy 3 I feel that’s A hint of what it could have been like It’s a bit sad to listen to Because it’s a true Brilliant song Written by Terry Hall And it’s sad when I saw them They were brilliant Jerry Dammers wasn’t involved with that So I’ve never got to see the Specials As they were Back then But still a brilliant song And I was listening to The Nouvelle Vague version They did a cover version With Terry Hall That’s when Nouvelle Vague Became A bit too much Like a weird covers band It wasn’t as good As the original Other punk links Holly Cook The daughter Paul Cook And Happy Hour That’s from the latest album Of the same name Came out in June That’s one of the tracks I wanted to put in And it sort of Been put in To get out This has become A sort of a best of Podcast I wasn’t intended to be There’s a lot of Things that Other podcasts That didn’t fit into that For instance I wanted to put them Into the Christmas podcast But then I wanted To put some shit in there And it’s sort of I didn’t want to You feel you have to One of these days Is going to be a Christmas Ride Don’t Do A That’ll be wonderful BB Seaton in again With a cover of The classic Thin Line Between Love and Hate The mid-70s And at the start Of the section Instamatic Ever since the challenge Which is Last week’s challenge Undermashed on Mashed I’ve been finding things That have been Undermashed And one of them Is Bonzo Dog Band And the orb is another The orb Mashed things But they very Rarely Mashed themselves Outside of Little fluffy clouds Anyway Is similar If I can’t think of any I can’t imagine When I suspect They’re probably all Urban Spaceman Not my favourite Bonzo Dog track ever So over each The end of the podcast I’m losing my voice And that’s always a good ending Tim loses his voice I’m not even on the red wine either It’s just Too much talking Just too much And I hope you have a good new year I need to panic when I post this I don’t need to post this Before the new year Or shortly afterwards But I hope you had one Or we’ll have one A time traveller’s 10th done, I’m written a But I hope you had a good one Or we’ll have a good one And I’ll see you in 2023 When we’ve got out Of this hinterland This strange hinterland I’m going to play out with a Another mashup of mine Yeah, it’s a whole mashup of some mine There’s only three Or is there four? There’s three This podcast Weird, I tend to Sort of do one per alias But this one I’ll allow myself Especially as I have to say The Instamatic track Was really a TBC track The Willesden Blue That’s not really an Instamatic track And the Bush of Ghosts one Is not really an Instamatic track either But this is TBC aka Instamatic With Only Living Boy in Jamaica And this is my year Ending track Anyways, this is very appropriate To actually end the podcast The last podcast of 2022 And fuck you 2022 I look forward to 2023 But I say that every year This is Boy Who We Be That’s Tanya Stephens Versus Simon and Garfunkel And I’ve been obsessed by Living Boy in New York Partly because Well, I am a Simon and Garfunkel stan It’s appeared in so many brilliant films It was in the normal heart At the end It’s in Garden State Which is a film Just rewatched it recently I still come back to that film I know some people have Stacked it off And I’m like, why? It is actually An amazingly brilliant film The ending is shit Yeah, like we’ve got to Tack on a happy ending here But the rest of it Is brilliant from Zach Braff I feel like I lost in translation Where someone just wandering through that life And just thinking, what the hell’s going on here? I’ve used to in mashups There was a Fever Ray mashup Where I used the scene where they’re in the pool Talking about families There’s all that stuff about going home And families Which links into the Dorothea mashup I did Links into the last podcast With home All that sort of stuff You know, so yeah No wonder I was watching Garden State again Yeah, it’s all about sort of Coming back to the place you grew up And just being weirded out by it Pretty much the film And also finding it The usual things of finding yourself And resolving things with your parents Not those Hollywood tropes But mostly the bit that’s interesting to me Is the whole Kind of feeling of going home Or whether you can really go home again And then after this I’m going to play a short little track From the Specials Because you know I have to start with Specials End with Specials Or I like to bring this full circle And enjoy yourself Reprise You’ve played them Enjoy yourself Before That was the difficult thing About this podcast So many of the things I wanted to play I’ve played before So this is The Only Living Boy in Jamaica And I hope you have a good New year And a good end of 2022 And a good start of 2023
